What is MOVE?

 
MOVE is a device that allows us to generate electricity through cardiovascular exercises such as running and walking. It uses piezoelectric technology to capture the force of the foot contacting the floor and converting this into an electrical current. The energy is stored inside the MOVE battery, which is mounted on the shoe laces. MOVE is designed to be unobtrusive when moving around. As well as exercising, MOVE will produce energy evening when you’re standing still or sitting at a desk.

 
Once a battery is full, visit a number of stores, bars and restaurants located around the city to deposit your energy. Just scan your MOVE Connect card and your MOVE battery, and swap it for an empty one. Your energy is then put back your the city. Every step you take while wearing MOVE provides that little bit of green energy to power your community. Currently small low power electronics such as digital displays, ticket machines and vending machines can be powered, but as more people join MOVE, more areas of the city could eventually be removed from the grid thus reducing the carbon footprint of the entire city.

 
The MOVE product comprises of the inner sole which produces the energy and a battery to store it in. The technology in MOVE has been carefully tested and researched in order to capture 100% of the energy exerted during any activity, while providing maximum comfort for the wearer. The sensors have been placed under the inner sole of the shoe only in areas where the greatest force is applied.

What does the future hold for MOVE?

 
The MOVE concept is currently in the early development stages with more research planned for future improvements:

 

• The production of Watts by MOVE is currently very low. It was calculated that in order to fill the battery 100%, you need to walk 107 miles. Not great, but a great incentive to get out and get moving I believe. The technology will need to be upgraded and with advancements in liquid metals, a more comfortable and discreet design can be produced.

 

• With the project only in development stage, the soles cannot be removed easily and put into other shoes. A future plan will be to encase all the electronics and sensors into a removable inner sole.

 

• The battery will also need to be upgraded to allow for a higher capacity and faster discharge. A recent discovery in flexible batteries could be a useful avenue for me to experiment with.

 

• Look into other human body energy harvesting methods, such as kinetic, body temperature and sound.

 

• Produce a credible rewards points system that encourages more people to join MOVE and help make our communities greener.
